Privacy Policy

Effective Date: May 19, 2026

Introduction

ScanHarbor (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. ScanHarbor is a document scanner for Android that is built to keep your documents on your device. This Privacy Policy explains how the app handles your data. ScanHarbor does not collect personal information, does not require an account, and does not transmit your documents anywhere.

No Accounts, No Tracking

  • No account required: There is no sign-up, no login, and no user database. You can use ScanHarbor without providing any name, email address, or other identifying information.
  • No analytics: ScanHarbor contains no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs. We do not build a profile of you or your usage.
  • No internet access: The app does not request the INTERNET permission and does not send your scans, extracted text, or any other data to our servers or any third party.

Data You Create

  • Scanned documents: Images and PDFs you capture are stored locally on your device in the app's private storage.
  • Recognized text (OCR): Text extracted from your scans is stored locally so you can search your documents. It never leaves your device.
  • Titles, folders, and metadata: Document names, folder organization, page counts, timestamps, and optional expiry dates you set are stored locally.

Permissions

ScanHarbor declares only the permissions it genuinely needs:

  • POST_NOTIFICATIONS — Used only to show optional on-device reminders, such as document expiry alerts. These notifications are scheduled locally on your device. No push server is involved and no data is sent off the device.
  • com.android.vending.BILLING — Used for the one-time Pro upgrade through Google Play Billing.

ScanHarbor does not request internet, location, contacts, microphone, or external storage permissions. Document capture uses Android's system document-scanner experience, so the app itself does not hold the camera permission.

On-Device Processing (Google ML Kit)

Document edge detection, scanning, and text recognition (OCR) are performed on your device using Google ML Kit and Google Play services. This processing runs locally on your phone. Your document images and recognized text are not sent to Google for processing by ScanHarbor.

The on-device models used for scanning and OCR may be delivered or updated by Google Play services. That delivery is handled by Google's system components, not by ScanHarbor, and is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. ScanHarbor does not transmit your documents through these components.

Data Security

  • File encryption: Scanned pages, thumbnails, and exported PDFs are encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM, with keys managed by the hardware-backed Android Keystore.
  • Database encryption: The document database, including recognized text and search data, is encrypted using SQLCipher.
  • Optional app lock: You can enable a biometric lock (fingerprint or face) to require authentication before the app can be opened.

Sharing & Backups

  • Sharing is user-initiated: Your documents leave the app only when you explicitly choose to share or export them using Android's share sheet. You control the destination.
  • Encrypted backups: Backups are optional and user-initiated. When you create one, it is encrypted with a passphrase you choose and saved to the location you select. We never receive a copy.
  • No automatic cloud sync: ScanHarbor does not sync your documents to any cloud service.

Purchases

The optional one-time Pro upgrade is processed by Google Play Billing. When you make a purchase, Google handles the transaction and shares only standard purchase information (such as the product purchased and a purchase token) needed to validate your entitlement. ScanHarbor does not receive your payment details, and no scan content is involved in a purchase. Google's handling of purchase data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or transmit your documents, recognized text, or any personal data to third parties or to our own servers. All document processing is performed on-device.

Data Retention and Deletion

Your data remains on your device until you delete individual documents or uninstall the application. Uninstalling ScanHarbor permanently removes its locally stored data. Because we never receive your data, we cannot access or recover it if it is lost.

Children

ScanHarbor is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children. Because the app collects no personal information at all, no such information about children is gathered.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
